Next Week is a Big One!
Monday: TCAP
Tuesday: Valentine’s Day
Wednesday: TCAP
Thursday: Garden of the Gods Fieldwork
Third grade will be taking the TCAP reading assessment this coming Monday and Wednesday, February 13th and 15th. This is a state assessment that students take for the first time in third grade. Please plan on being in town and having your child at school that week. We will take the writing and math assessments later in March.
For Vday, see notes below about having a decorated shoebox and Valentines for all members of our crew.

Learning Targets for Garden of the Gods Field Experience
• We can synthesize our learning and record our thinking.
• We can listen to one another and share our experience.
• We can participate by balancing listening with speaking.
**Students arrive and are dismissed at normal school times
Crew Learning Expedition:We have continued our study of geology by exploring the different values of rocks (who values rocks, how, and why). We have also reflected on our learning, and I was deeply impressed by the level of thinking students are doing in this expedition! Today, we began discussing tectonic plates, earthquakes, and how the surface of the earth shifts and changes. We are looking forward to next week's field work at Garden of the Gods! HINTS AT HOME: What new facts have you learned about rocks this week? | Writing/Reading:We have continued practicing writing to a prompt in the form of a paragraph and a letter. Students enjoyed writing about what they would choose for a superpower and writing a persuasive letter about why we should adopt a class pet. In reading, we have practiced "reading packets," so that students feel familiar with the format of reading a short text and answering questions about it. Students are doing a great job of using test-taking strategies during these exercises. |
Math:We are almost finished with Unit 7, about multiplication and division. Some students have struggled with this unit because they do not know their multiplication and division facts. Please continue to review math facts (multiplication and division!) with your child nightly. They are very important. We have reached a point in the year where this needs to be done nightly so your student knows these facts quickly. If you need ideas about how to practice, or would like to be pointed toward resources to use, please ask. It is enough to quiz your child in the car to and from school every day on their facts through 12. | Language Workshop:We have launched a unit of study on nonfiction text. Students demonstrated a mastery of identifying text features, so we will be focusing more on how the writing of nonfiction text is different that writing other kinds of writing. We will eventually tie this into our expedition and writing about our learning of geology. HINTS AT HOME: How is nonfiction different that other kinds of writing? |
Spelling: Here is the spelling list for this week. The spelling test will be on 2/22 (2 weeks) so that students do not have to study during TCAP. :)
Winter Voyage:
It's coming up quick! Check out the gear list, so that third graders are prepared for our winter voyage! Click here for the GEAR LIST
Valentine's Day Party: We will be having a Vday Party on 2/14 from 9-9:55. Marianne will be coordinating breakfast foods, fruit, and juice. Stay tuned for her email!
Please have students decorate a shoebox, bag, or a container that can be brought to school on this day. There will be no time during school to decorate it.
In previous years, I have found that these celebrations are more meaningful when Valentines are thoughtful. I encourage home-made Valentines, and but store-bought Valentines can be personalized and work too. Please have students make enough Valentines for all of our crew (25). Here is a list of names: Anthony, Blayne, Camille, Dagan, Dylan, Ethan, Gillian, Hal, Haven, Ian, Isabella, Joshua, Keegan, Leah, Madelyn, Nikki, Marissa, Mason, Max, Nicole, Olivia, Shelby, Tayler, Tessa, & Vinnie.
