A Peek into our Classroom
Students present our service learning project and tell about the construction of our outdoor music area during All School Meeting.

The final installation of our music instruments was in full swing today. We persevered through frigid temperatures and in spite of it taking much longer than we had expected. The students were excellent helpers and were thrilled to see the project through to its completion. School-wide, we have received positive feedback about how much crews of all grades are enjoying our outdoor music instruments. Hooray!

Thank you for all your support and enthusiasm with this project!

Crew Learning

Expedition/Language: Students learned more about the properties of solids, liquids, and gases through research and experiments. To demonstrate how fast molecules move in hot and cold liquids, we did a "molecule race." We finished the week with learning about the water cycle and it's connection to the states of matter.

HINTS AT HOME: Sing the water cycle song: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff!
Writing
We used this time to practice for portfolio presentations. Some 4th graders came to share about their experiences from last year's portfolio presentations and answer questions. The most beneficial experience was practicing with the 6th graders, where they were able to do a serious practice and receive constructive feedback. After their presentations, students wrote very powerful reflections about this experience. Wow, has their writing grown!

Language:
We had some fun experimenting with procedural writing. Next week we will move on to poetry!

HINTS AT HOME: What did you learn about yourself during the portfolio presentation? How can you apply this experience to other life situations?
Math: This week, we launched a unit on measurement. It began with a review of reading half, quarter, and eighth inch on a ruler. Then we did exploratory learning about volume to find the algorithm: area of base x height = volume.

HINTS AT HOME:Some student did not feel as confident using the ruler. Have your student show you how to measure parts of an inch.

Reading Workshop:We used our reading time to catch up with literature discussion groups. Students are doing a great job with their deep conversations about text.

HINTS AT HOME: What do you feel is going well in literature discussion groups? What goals are you working on?

Spelling: Spelling will come home in Thursday folders. Please remind students to study these patterns and do spelling homework due next Wednesday. Click Here for our Spelling List!
